Neurodiverse Community
The vast majority of folks that I work with are part of the neurodivergent community. Generally, folks who have ADHD or autism or both. I often tell clients who come in either already with these, or thoughts of these, or we agree they should get tested for these: whether or not you have these diagnoses does not change the work we do together, it’s just more information for us to have. ADHD, for example, may explain why you physically cannot get off of the couch, rather than depression. Or, autism, for example, may explain an unstable pattern of interpersonal relationships, rather than BPD.
It’s just a different way of thinking and being. Your neurodiversity does not change our therapeutic work together. But it does provide us further, very important evidence, to guide our work together. I still want to address the things that bother you, we still want to change the things that are harmful in your day-to-day life. But I never want to change the way your brain works – too often, historically, therapeutic interventions for neurodiversity did unintentional harm. We want to work with your brain, not against it.
Working with my neurodivergent clients is truly one of the most fun things that I get to do. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or to get started working together.
