Women’s Mental Health
Psychological theories and research that we base much of modern mental health out of were generally created by white men. This is what makes it so important for providers to acquire specialized knowledge in working with women’s mental health – because every day we come to the same, “new” realization: research only built around one type of people does not work for everyone, and much of our baseline knowledge was not built around people we are working with on the day to day. ADHD is different for women, anxiety is different for women, borderline is different for women, the list goes on and on and on. The way women (and truly, anyone who is not a cisgender man) experience the world is so individualized to culture and socialization and safety in a way that has a ginormous impact on mental health.
It is imperative to understand the greater social, cultural, economic, etc. context of women in the world to be able to treat you in the therapeutic space. Many women in Western society are taught to not be “too much”, to care for others first, to put their worth in the hands of others lest they be cast out into unsafe waters, all of which has a profound impact on how we view ourselves and how we experience our emotions. You need to be given space for your feelings without question, or intellectualizing, or judgement, or doubt that what you feel is wrong. You need space to process. That is a big piece of what I hope to help you with, and why I specialize in women’s mental health. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me to get started on this exploration.
